OUR PROJECTS
-
Big Game Study
Brian Hartford
Our Big Game Study, helps us to understand the presence, movement, and wellbeing of our larger species while anticipating how they may react to a changing climate. This project focuses on key cultural species that have been hunted by the Peskotomuhkatiyik for generations, such as deer, moose, bear, and turkey. For more information email Brian.Hartford@qonaskamkuk.com .

Turtle Project
Kaydie Greenier
The goal of our turtle project is to monitor the mortality rates of New Brunswick’s 3 native turtle species: the Painted Turtle, the Wood Turtle, and the Common Snapping Turtle. After a few years of collecting data we hope to create safer nesting areas and help to redirect the turtles from busy roadside areas. For more information email kaydie.greenier@qonaskamkuk.com.

Hydroponics
Vanessa Vongnhay
Our Hydroponics project aims to grow fresh produce for the Peskotomuhkati Food Pantry to help community members who are experiencing food insecurity. By operating our two hydroponics tables at local schools, this project also supports agricultural education for students to learn how to grow various plants in controlled environments. Climate Change Adaptation in the Passamaquoddy Bay
Kate Slorach
This project unites the Peskotomuhkati Nation and local partners to plan for the impacts of climate change along the coastal areas of the Passamaquoddy Bay. It focuses on protecting sacred sites from sea level rise and erosion while creating shoreline plans that use Indigenous knowledge alongside Western science to ensure community safety. Herbarium
Vanessa Vongnhay
The Peskotomuhkati Herbarium is a collection of plant specimens preserved for the purposes of knowledge sharing within the community. The Peskotomuhkatiyik have long used plants for medicinal and cultural purposes, but much of this knowledge is at risk of being lost. The herbarium serves as an interactive teaching tool for all generations, helping to pass down traditional knowledge. The herbarium will also help track how species shift across habitats and respond to climate change. For more information email vanessa.vongnhay@qonakamkuk.com .

Earth Protectors
Team Project
Our team works to protect and monitor the Skutik Indigenous Protected and Cultural Area (IPCA) and the general Peskotomuhkati territory in various ways. In the field our team identifies species at risk, installs yellow hunting disks, stewards littered areas, clears blocked culverts, documents areas of medicinal plants, and monitors the land for threats and disturbances.
